It’s summer in Australia and the end of the
school year. To pass the time, my friend Jennifer and I have decided to do some
baking together. We hope to able to get together at least once a week. This
week we made gingerbread men to get into the festive spirit. We used a recipe
from an old recipe book that I had for years. The cover is gone and some of the
pages are battered. I considered throwing it away a few years back but luckily
I didn’t do that. I haven’t included the recipe in this post because you can
find gingerbread recipes anywhere on the internet and this post is about me
reflecting on a happy memory rather than a food tutorial.
I had never made biscuits before so I hoped
that the gingerbread men would turn out alright. We each bought the ingredients
before we met for the day as it was the fairest thing to do. While we cooked,
we talked about everything under the sun. I love how cooking is an opportunity
to get to know another person. We also washed up as we went along because we
didn’t want to wash a huge pile of dishes at the end of the day.
our biscuits
We cut the cookies into gingerbread men using a cookie cutter and just made some regular circle cookies. When the biscuits were cooked, we iced them blue, green, yellow and red. Jennifer said the circle biscuits looked like Christmas baubles. We both weren’t that great with the icing so they didn’t look professional but they looked cute enough.
At the end of the day, we divided the
biscuits between ourselves. We got eighteen each. It was a fun and relaxing
day. Sometimes you don’t need to spend a lot of money or go out to have a good
time. The next thing we’ll be making is Oreo Cheesecake.
I've really only had one communal cooking experience with a friend when we made meatloaf together. It was fun and while I'd say the meatloaf was average and could have used a little more flavor perhaps, it was still yummy and there was a good feeling of accomplishment. It was also fun. I'm glad you and Jenny had a nice time and plan to continue your cooking dates in a manner of speaking. One of the things I love about home cooking is that it's more about having a good time and making something tasty than it is about presentation. The fact that so many Christmas decorations are hand-made, fun decor, that I loved the Christmas baubles analogy Jenny used. Still hard for us Northern Hempispherians to get used to the idea of Christmas in Summer. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI think I will get better at icing things with more practise. One day, I hope to give baked goods off as presents and I would love it if they were beautifully presented. I know presentation doesn't matter too much but I would like to improve my skills.
DeleteColorful gingerbreads! Would love to have a bite haha
ReplyDeleteThanks Joshua!
DeleteOh, this reminds me that I should bake some gingerbread cookies, too. Don't think I'll color them, though. That would be too much work. Lol.
ReplyDeleteOreo Cheesecake!!! <333 Pictures please! :)
I hope you do Cayce as it's a fun activity. I will certainly do a post about Oreo cheesecake.
DeleteI love the colors of your gingerbread men! I think the presentation doesn't really matter as long as it tastes good. baking with friend sounds really fun, I think I should do it sometime.
ReplyDeleteby the way, Merry Christmas guys! ^_^ hope you have a happy holiday!
Thanks Prisilia and Merry Christmas to you too! The gingerbread tasted great, I was really pleased about the flavour.
