3. Why do you blog?

Source
I've always enjoyed writing and I wanted to share my writing with the world. When I was growing up, I dreamed of being a writer. I mostly wrote stories and dreamed of being a famous author one day. When I grew up, I didn't want to be a writer any more. I haven’t written a story since I was a teenager. I stopped writing because I didn't like my writing style. I felt that I couldn't write a good story, my stories lacked sincerity because I didn't have much life experience. I think my characters suffered from bad dialogue as well. I did research to add more authenticity to my stories but I still wasn't satisfied with them.

I started to think about blogging while I was in university. I had completed a few assignments where I had to make websites on various educational issues (I was studying to be a teacher) and I enjoyed writing about my opinions. I learnt that maybe story writing is not for me. I think I'm more of a recount person.

So I decided to create a blog with my friend Jon Bear. I wanted to blog about my goals and I wanted to write more. I'm very goal orientated and I believe in being public about goals in order to keep accountable for them. I also wanted a place where I could express my opinion. I think blogging has helped me to be a better communicator as I was able to articulate what I liked and disliked.

While I like having people reading the blog, I don’t really care about being a popular blogger. I think it would be nice to have heaps of readers but this is more of a personal blog. Apart from our book reviews, we don’t really give advice or anything useful to the reader. We focus more on our personal lives which might not be that interesting to others.  I once read a blog post that said that people feel awkward about investing time in reading a personal blog because they don’t know the person. They have to read so much to understand the background of the person and that’s a big investment. People want to be entertained and don’t want to work on it.

The main thing I want to get out of the blog is to be able to look back on my life and to be able to communicate better. Sometimes blogging has pushed me out of my comfort zone to do interesting things and I’m grateful to have that inspiration. I really don’t know how long we’ll keep blogging but I know that I will keep blogging as long as it stays fun.

  1. It's interesting for me to read your perspective on this Carlyn. Mine is really much the same in that I blog for us mostly. That's not to say that I don't keep in mind that we have and want an audience, but what I hope to get most from our blog is lessons I can learn from and grow from myself. I hope that's not "selfish blogging", because I truly do hope that for others who choose to invest some of their valuable time here, that they might take or learn something from our blog too.

    1. I also hope that people can gain some insight into our experiences and learn from them as well. In particular, I hope that student teachers and college students can identify with some of personal posts. I also hope to inspire others to read some of the books that we have enjoyed.
